18 students receive scholarships through a local organization

JACKSON, Tenn. — A local organization rewards local students for their creativity and academic achievement.

Leaders of the organization say being able to help local students is one of the missions they strive to achieve.

“We want to make sure that we invest in the future of our children. Being able to provide scholarships to senior graduates and letting them take the next step of the college aspect is very exciting for us,” said Leigh Anne Bentley, President of the Leaders Education Foundation.

Eighteen high school graduates from across West Tennessee have received scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $2,500 from the Leaders Education Foundation.

Bentley says that not only is the total monetary amount of scholarships increasing, but also the number of recipients.

“Last year we gave away 15,000. This year we’re giving away 25,000,” Bentley said. “This year we’ve had several more than last year. This is one of the reasons we ended up awarding more scholarships this year. Our selection committee was so impressed with the applications received that we ended up dropping four more than we had originally planned.

Bentley says the requirements for the scholarship vary.

“We are looking for people who have academic achievements, school achievements, community involvement and so all aspects of the scholarship may vary,” Bentley said.

One recipient says she is honored to receive this type of support.

“It’s very encouraging, I would say, because you’ve worked so hard your whole life to get good grades, get involved in the community, give back and know that there are organizations like this ready to support you after to have supported your community is truly a fulfilling feeling,” said Elle Jerge, a fellow.

Bentley says the Foundation tries to help as many students as possible.

“We are proud to be part of the West Tennessee community. We want to make sure we give back and our whole mission is to make life better together,” Bentley said.

Bentley says the application process for the 2023 scholarships is expected to begin in February next year.
