Cancer Patients Find Relief in Local Nonprofit
MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – When cancer is diagnosed, everyday tasks like cleaning become difficult for many patients. Today, a local non-profit organization is helping local cancer patients clean their homes for free.
In 2006, Debbie Sardone founded the non-profit organization, Cleaning for a Reason.
The organization has had a huge impact on cancer patients across the country, and now it’s trying to grow more locally.
Sardone said their clients have needed this kind of help for a long time.
“Cancer patients who have this vulnerable immune system need a cleanse more than ever,” she added.
Sardone said he met a potential client who had to turn down cleaning services because he couldn’t afford to pay while paying for cancer treatments.
It was then that Sardone decided that no one with cancer would be turned away from his company, and Cleaning for a Reason was born.
Cancer patients are now offered a free home cleaning service anywhere in the United States and Canada.
Sardone added: “It’s so tangible and practical, when someone needs help and a team comes into their home and starts cleaning the bathrooms, mopping and vacuuming the rugs are just such a personal act of love.”
Julie Windham is the CEO of Midland Housekeeping Incorporated. She said she and many of her employees have been affected by cancer.
In 2017, when she heard about Cleaning for a Reason, she knew she had to help.
“With them and with us, because we are so family-oriented, it affects them too, so they want to be part of it too. So it became more of a company-wide thing,” Windham said.
Currently, Windham and his team say they are the only ones cleaning the homes of local cancer patients for free.
Windham made sure to add, “Nothing is charged to them, I don’t earn a penny, everything and every product we use is completely, 100% free.”
Dorrian Wallace is a cancer patient and she is also a customer of Windham cleaning services thanks to cleaning for a reason.
She was diagnosed with cancer in 2017 and said finding Windham and Cleaning for a Reason was a huge relief.
“Knowing that there are people out there who understand your situation, don’t say my house is always dirty but it gets messy, you know, full of clutter, so knowing they’ll come and they’ll just be happy to helping you out is amazing,” said a grateful Wallace.
Wallace said the ability to focus on what really matters to her, her family and her health, comforts her.
“I didn’t even think about hanging out my laundry, but they did too, so just little things like that help people understand and know what you’re going through,” Wallace said.
Since Midland Housekeeping became part of Cleaning for a Reason, Windham has also dedicated her time to creating a line of cleaning products that she says are extremely healthy for her customers.
“We have a lot of clients who are on a lot of medication, there are a lot of people with lung issues, and we really want to focus on providing a safe, easy-to-breathe environment,” Windham said.
Sardone said she was happy to see so many people willing to do more for their community.
“Now that we have over 12 hundred cleaning companies in the United States and Canada, who are doing the same thing in their community by cleaning for a reason, simply giving free house cleaning to families battling cancer. , it’s literally the best feeling in the world,” an ecstatic Sardone expressed.
Wallace and the other patients are grateful to the cleaners.
“You are the most vulnerable, your home is your refuge, you know, so every time they pass by, I never get any weird or weird feelings, I’m just glad they’re here.”
