GDOT and Adopt A Highway Maintenance Corporation to Boost Statewide Waste Prevention Efforts

This week, the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) announced the next phase of its ongoing partnership with Adopt a Highway Maintenance Corporation® (AHMC), unveiling new highway signs urging citizens across the state to “Keep It Clean Georgia”.

As part of the partnership, the existing Clean Georgia Highway sponsorship program will be rebranded as part of the Georgia DOT Keep It Clean Georgia Anti-Litter Campaign, bringing the state’s initiative to fight litter on the sides of the roads thanks to the creation of new road signs representing the Keep It Clean Georgia logo.

Following the launch of Keep It Clean Georgia in October 2020, Georgia DOT and AHMC began discussions on how to expand their existing partnership as a natural link to the already existing statewide Clean Georgia Highway Campaign in through the Georgia Sponsor A Highway® program and partners. ‘ Shared goal to expand litter control efforts across Georgia. Initially, Georgia DOT and AHMC collaborated on a co-branded social media campaign over the summer of 2021, creating custom imagery and messaging aimed at maintaining focus on Georgia’s natural beauty while educating residents. Georgians on important anti-litter practices that every Georgian can follow.

“From our initial introduction to Georgia DOT’s Keep It Clean Georgia campaign, we were not only impressed with the department’s overall commitment to tackling waste statewide, but we also knew we wanted to be even more directly involved as we consistently see the significant impact waste has on the safety and appearance of state highways and highways nationwide,” said Robert Davis, National Sales and Marketing Manager for AHMC. “Working closely with the Georgia DOT team on last year’s #GAAdoptsClean social campaign, we saw the rebranding of existing Clean Georgia road signs with the Keep It Clean Georgia logo as the natural next step not only to expand our working relationship, but also to amplify the campaign’s mission to reach all Georgians across the state.

Through the existing Georgia Sponsor A Highway Program, AHMC facilitates everything from the design and installation of sponsorship signs to garbage collection services performed along highways. Roadside sponsorship increases positive brand recognition for businesses within the community without forcing sponsors to do the cleanup themselves. Instead, AHMC operates professionally trained cleaning crews to perform scheduled waste removal services throughout the sponsor’s contract term.

Every year, nearly $11.5 billion is spent on trash cleanup in the United States, largely due to the five pounds of trash the average American produces daily. In partnership with AHMC, the Georgia Sponsor A Highway Program offers a way to successfully offset trash removal costs by allowing businesses across the state to step in and fund trash removal services the along a sponsored stretch of highway.

“No matter where you live in Georgia, you have undoubtedly seen the impact of trash on our roads, parks, and the environment as a whole,” said Russell McMurry, PE, Georgia DOT Commissioner. “The key to fighting and preventing litter is teamwork and education, which serve as the foundation of Georgia DOT’s Keep It Clean Georgia campaign. We are excited to continue expanding our partnership with Adopt A Highway Maintenance Corporation with the goal of not only expanding the reach of Keep It Clean Georgia’s core mission, but also leading the way in helping keep our state without waste.

Originally launched in October 2020, the Keep It Clean Georgia campaign is a statewide initiative focused on preventing and eliminating litter by motivating Georgians and visitors to the Peach State not not only to avoid litter in the first place, but also to play an active role in protecting and maintaining the breathtaking views and rich landscapes that make Georgia the heart of the South. Rather than focusing the campaign’s creativity on showcasing images of litter strewn across roads and highways, Keep It Clean Georgia capitalizes on the pride of Georgians by highlighting the state’s natural beauty as a reminder of the lasting impact of waste on the environment, from the mountains to the coast.
