Moonbirds And Oddities will move to a CC0 license: what you need to know

Creator of Moonbirds Kevin Rose announced that Moonbirds and Oddities will upgrade to a CC0 license, marking a significant departure for the well-known NFT project.

No rights are reserved on intellectual property, or CC0, often known as the Creative Commons.

It is a type of copyright that allows authors to waive their legal rights to their work and, where possible, transfer it to the public domain.

Since there is no copyright limitation anymore, anyone can now use Moonbirds NFT art freely.

CC0 license honors internet values

“Today we are announcing that @moonbirds and @oddities_xyz are moving to the CC0 public license. We believe this move honors and respects the values of the Internet and Web3 and kicks off an important new phase of the project,” Rose said.

Rose said he has been building consumer products since 2004 with the launch of Digg, the first social news website. Shortly after launch, he saw many projects iterate on the idea, taking what he had invented and pushing things in new directions.

“The default knee-jerk reaction is to protect what you have created. Historically, you do this by enforcing and protecting patents/trademarks/copyrights. I used to defend these old structures, and in some circumstances they still make sense, but Web3 is a chance to reboot and re-examine everything by going back to basics. A chance to say that others don’t need to fail for us to win. A chance to be more inclusive and open to all,” Rose said.

Anyone can create apps without permission

Citing Ethereum as an example, he said anyone could build permissionless applications on top of this low-trust database without fear of having their protocol, platform or asset taken away from them.

“In this new future, true ownership is dictated by what’s recorded on the channel, as it should be, not government or corporate hosted recording,” Rose said.

Earlier this week, acclaimed crypto artist XCOPY announced that they would apply CC0 retrospectively to all of their previously published works, excluding works on which they have collaborated.

Grant Yun and other NFT developers like Deca have also launched successful CC0 projects.

Goblintown, a major NFT project, had launched as CC0, causing irrelevant goblin-themed compilations to temporarily dominate the OpenSea charts.

Formation of Moonbirds DAO

Meanwhile, Rose also revealed the planned formation of the Moonbirds DAO, which will be largely responsible for managing the general licensing of the Moonbirds and Oddities brands and protecting against fraud, hate speech and acts of violence in the community.
