President of domestic violence organization addresses challenges during pandemic

(WTNH) – October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. During the pandemic and the isolation, the challenges were greater than ever.

News 8’s Rich Coppola spoke to someone who has taken challenges head-on.

The Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence (CCADV) is an organization of members of the state’s 18 domestic violence service agencies. Recently, News 8 met with President and CEO Meghan Scanlon.

“I hope we continue this dialogue after October and continue to reduce the shame around it, reduce the stigma and really talk about the fact that these are issues that women face all year round,” Scanlon said.

When it comes to domestic violence, the warning signs are not always physical violence. Earlier this year Jennifer’s Law was enacted. The law is named after Jennifer Dulos and Jennifer Magnano. Both lost their lives as a result of domestic violence. The new law extends protections to include coercive control.

“I think it gives judges the power, it allows our court lawyers who work with individuals to be able, in the circumstances where it applies, to use coercive control in the definition to seek a protective order, a restraining order that is not necessarily, is not related to physical abuse, ”Scanlon said.

Scanlon has a wealth of experience in politics and non-profit organization. Most recently, she was the Executive Director of the Women and Family Life Center.

“We are facing a federal reduction over the next two years in one of our major funding streams, which would be devastating to our ability to deliver services to the level we currently provide them,” says Scanlon .

Scanlon believes we have all learned a lot from the pandemic and that in the future she plans to forge more partnerships in terms of fundraising and fundraising.

“We need to devote resources to the women and children, as well as the men who suffer from them, but especially children as we move forward. We need to focus on the future and make sure they have the resources to succeed beyond this experience, ”said Scanlon.
