Impact Advisory and edie’s Official B Corp Partner, Seismic, has announced its certification as a B Corporation (or B Corp), joining a growing group of companies reinventing business by pursuing purpose as well as profit. As they celebrate their first anniversary, Seismic has been certified by Laboratory Bthe nonprofit organization behind the B Corp movement, as having met rigorous social and environmental standards that represent its commitment to goals other than shareholder profit.
Seismic already shares strong ties with the B Corp community as an advisor to many companies on their B Corp certification journey. “You have so many Bs to be proud of: your first birthday, a certified B Corp, all celebrated in B Corp month. It was meant for B! Congratulations on a fantastic first year and many more to come said Katie Hill, CEO of B Lab Europe.
The B Corp certification covers the entire operations of a company and covers five key impact areas of governance, workers, community, environment and customers. The certification process is rigorous, with candidates required to achieve a benchmark score of over 80 while demonstrating socially and environmentally responsible practices in energy supply, waste and water use, compensation of workers, diversity and corporate transparency. To complete the certification, Seismic has legally incorporated its commitment to a purpose beyond profit into its company bylaws.
Seismic CEO and co-founder Paul Lewis says, “Seismic certified with 99 points on the BIA. It’s not perfect, but we are proud to have achieved this score one year after launching Seismic. We are now ready to take on the challenge of improving our score. We view B Corp as a framework for improvement, using it to build processes and expand our impact to improve our business.
Seismic is now part of a community of 4,800 companies worldwide that have achieved B Corps certification. The B Corp community in the UK, representing a wide range of industries and sizes, comprises over 700 companies and includes well-known brands such as innocent drinks, Lily’s Kitchen, Sipsmith Gin and Pukka. Companies that Seismic has supported in their sustainable development initiatives.
Chris Turner, Executive Director of B Lab UK, said: “We are delighted that Seismic is now a certified B Corporation. It is a movement of companies that are committed to changing the way business works and believe that business can truly be a force for good. Our friends at Seismic champion this movement every day, and they’re a great addition to the B Corp community.
“Welcoming Seismic is an exciting time as they have already helped many companies certify as B Corps and trained many B Leaders – and now they can fly the B Corp flag too. Seismic’s commitment to doing business differently will be an inspiration to others and will truly help spread the idea that we can redefine success in business to be as much about people and planet as it is about profit.”
Faversham House, publisher of edie and Utility Week, has partnered with Seismic to support its own goal of becoming a Certified B Corporation. The independent media company, which operates brands in the sustainability, utilities and visual communications sectors, embarked on the B Corp journey as part of its goal to be a force for good among its employees, its public, its suppliers and the environment.
Seismic is an international team of impact experts whose mission is to help businesses thrive by becoming increasingly impactful forces for good.
