Strengthening Girijan Cooperative Corporation, Minister Says to Officials


Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Tribal Welfare P. Pushpa Srivani called on officials to take action to strengthen the Girijan Cooperative Corporation (GCC) and make it profitable. She was addressing staff after a review meeting on GCC and coffee here on Saturday.

Ms. Srivani said that the GCC should strive to face competition by improving the quality of products. She said that the GCC should go to the villages inside the agency and get supplies from the farmers. This will be closely watched, she added.

The Minister indicated that processing units for coffee, turmeric and other products will be set up within the Agency. The minister said she would urge the chief minister to ensure that turmeric, tamarind and a few other GCC products are used in temples under the endowments department. It would benefit the tribes, she added.

The Deputy Chief Minister also stressed the need to protect GCC lands and added that if necessary, they would allow the construction of commercial complexes on GCC lands.

Tribal Welfare Secretary Kantilal Dande said they would deploy mobile vans to sell GCC products in weeklies and tourist spots in Visakhapatnam.

MP Araku G. Madhavi, MP Paderu K. Bhagya Lakshmi and others were present.
