The company’s eviction campaign was halted by opposition from street vendors
The eviction campaign launched by Corporation officials in Kamarajar Salai near Vilakkuthoon on Saturday was halted as street vendors staged a roadside roko opposing the campaign.
“As many as 10 handcarts were evicted from Ward 47 areas including Pathu Thoon and Vilakkuthoon. Umbrellas erected in front of some stores encroaching on the roads were also razed by earth-moving machinery,” said P. Sureshkumar, Deputy Commissioner of South Zone IV.
Twenty unauthorized billboards and posters were also removed as part of the eviction campaign, he added.
Eventually, the ride was cut short as various members of street vendor associations staged a road roko demanding to stop the ride. They demanded proper attribution for sales areas instead of damaging their property.
As tension reigned, the police had to step in and hold peace talks with the parties. The campaign was halted to ease tension and maintain law and order primarily in view of Independence Day, a Corporation official said.
Sellers were allowed to relocate their shops.
Mr. Sureshkumar said the eviction campaign will resume at the earliest as there is a need to reduce the traffic jams induced by these street vendors during peak hours.
