Trump sues New York AG over Trump Organization investigation | New York

(The Center Square) – Former President Trump and the Trump Organization filed a lawsuit in federal court this week to stop New York Attorney General Letitia James’ investigations into the two.

In a 30-page complaint, Trump and the company say their rights to the First, Fourth and 14th Amendments have been violated. The lawsuit seeks injunctions against James “to cease immediately or, at a minimum, appropriately limit all pending investigations” for the duration of the lawsuit. The plaintiffs are also seeking a judgment finding that James’ actions represent “inadmissible state action and an abuse of process” for political ends.

“She is entrusted with a lot of power which she is obliged to use in a resolute and impartial manner,” said the lawsuit. Rather than take on this responsibility, James instead chose to exploit it. For years, she blatantly abused her investigative powers to target her political opponents and advance her career. Her relentless attacks on Donald J. Trump are a perfect example.

The lawsuit lists James as “an outspoken political activist” and said that four years ago she made the fight against the then president the cornerstone of her campaign for the post of attorney general. .

James launched an investigation in 2019 into Trump and the development company he created. This investigation began after former Trump attorney Michael Cohen told a congressional panel that the company’s annual financial reports would inflate the values of certain properties in order to obtain better rates for loans and plans. insurance while simultaneously downgrading other properties for tax purposes.

In May, it was reported that the Attorney General’s investigation was turning into a criminal case.

In a statement, James said Trump and his company made a point of blocking the investigation. She called the complaint to a US district court in Albany an “attempted collateral attack” on her office’s efforts.

“To be clear, neither Mr. Trump nor the Trump Organization can dictate whether and where they will answer for their actions,” James said. “Our investigation will continue without being discouraged because no one is above the law, not even someone called Trump.”

Trump isn’t the only one responsible for saying James has political motives behind his work.

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo also called James, saying she was seeking political leverage from the independent investigation into the sexual harassment allegations against Cuomo, who resigned from his post in August.

Earlier this year, James announced his intention to run for governor next year and challenge outgoing Governor Kathy Hochul for the Democratic nomination. However, earlier this month she backtracked and instead chose to run for reelection next year.
